The most common solution to this is surgery which is usually carried out when the child reaches the age of at least 5 years old. Before this the cartilage framework of the ear is too soft to hold the stitches. Children sadly often suffer teasing before their ear problem is corrected. The ear buddy is a flexible splint which can correct simple deformities and pin back prominent ears at birth. Developed by a Plastic Surgeon, the splint works by moulding the extremely soft cartilage in a newborn baby's ears. The sooner after birth they are fitted, the more effective the result, although they may still prove effective in the first six months. Three weeks of splintage is usually enough to reshape a baby's ear permanently if fitted within a few days of birth. The later it is fitted, the longer the splint must stay in place.
