The drop side is controlled by a foot release. ..... We do it right and are proud of each of our cribs. They have the consideration, design, and sophistication that goes into all of our furniture. All of our Cribs display tasteful design, solid and substantial components, unobtrusive hardware, careful construction, and a sophisticated and durable finish.   All of our cribs will last for generations. The addition of the front rail in place of the drop side allows them to be used as a youth bed, and finally as a small settle or dressing couch. Have you noticed that ALL cribs, no matter what price range, have cheap plastic mechanisms for the drop side. If not plastic, they have the ugly metal mounting plate for adjusting the mattress height. We have discarded the ugliest parts of the hardware and substituted hidden threaded inserts to mount the mattress and drop rails. The mattress can be set at four different heights..  The fixed side has all of its mounting hardware hidden. This takes us much longer to do, than just bolting on some clumsy universal hardware. We think that the results are more than worth it.  Because this piece is viewed from each side and ends, both inside and out, extreme care is taken in the choice of wood. ORYou can spend $400. to $1200 on rickety import garbage that will survive one use functioning properly , and be discarded by its third use. Our finish is SECOND TO NONE...IT IS DEEP, RICH, AND LUXURIOUS.We wet every part, and the finished piece with hot water many times, and sand them, before staining. This raises the grain several times, and guarantees the finish will still be as elegant in 100 years as it is now.... We finish all of our work using Water Soluble Aniline Dyes for a crystal clear, deep color. Aniline dyes are known for their deep rich color, absolute clarity, and colorfastness. Water based Aniline Dyes are hard to master, and almost never used commercially.But they produce a depth and clarity that is recognized as unmatchable.Between each coat of the stain, sealer, glaze,sealer,and three coats of lacquer, we sand the piece with 320 grit for a FINISH THAT IS AS WONDERFUL TO FEEL AS IT IS TO SEE..........FINALLY, We HAND RUB the entire piece with rubbing lubricant and FINE Scotchbrite pads for a JADE SMOOTH FINISH. .....
